"The Unpardonable Sin"
An extract from Good Morning, Holy Spirit by Benny Hinn
"Can blasphemy against the Father be forgiven?" a friend asked me.
"Yes", I answered.
"What about blasphemy against the Son?"
"That's also forgivable", I said.
"Then can you tell me why blasphemy against the Holy Spirit can't be forgiven!"
For most people, the topic is troublesome. They wonder why only the Holy Spirit !
This should tell you how important He is to the Godhead - the Blessed Trinity.
Matthew 12:30-32 NIV Reads; "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."
In this passage from verse 22 there was an issue of a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and was brought to Jesus Christ to be healed. And Jesus did heal him. But all the people there were astonished, and so verse 23 says they asked; "...,Could this be the Son of David?". The Pharisees heard this and said in verse 24; ..."It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons."
Jesus knowing they're thoughts rebukes them. He went on to tell them about the "Unpardonable Sin" in verses 31 & 32.
The word blasphemy, what does it encompass?
The word has several meanings, including
• to speak evil of (or to scoff)
• to revile - to abuse, reproach or speak profanity of , to defame - to speak with injury
• to slander - to accuse falsely
• to insult
Oxford has it that :
• to show irreverence towards something considered sacred
• the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence towards a deity
Any of the above meanings is what blasphemy entails.
Some may ask, "How do you defame the Holy Ghost?"
Or "How do you insult the Him?"
It's a willful/deliberate act. The book of Hebrews speaks directly to the issue: "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgement and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:26-29).
The words are followed by a stern reminder: " For we know him who said, 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' and again, 'The Lord will judge his people.' It is a dreadful thing to fall in the hands of the living God. (vv. 30-31).
Hence we see that any act that's a willful or deliberate sin, after we have come to know the knowledge of the word of God is punishable.
Especially; "...who trampled the Son of God underfoot, who treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace.."
God doesn't forgive anyone who insults the Spirit of grace - His precious Holy Spirit.
How do you insult the Holy Spirit ? Let's not forget blasphemy doesn't only mean to insult, it also mean to disregard a deity or a sacred being. To say that it was the devil who did it or it was 'juju' or magic, when clearly it was the miracle working power of the precious Holy Spirit. And disregarding His existence and presence.
Why is there no forgiveness for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Throughout the Bible, we see that there's a uniqueness-a difference-in the Holy Ghost from the Father and the Son. He is not higher nor lower than the Father or the Son, but we come to know His characteristics.
God almighty, the Father, is the great God of heaven and must be worshipped, praised, glorified, magnified, and uplifted. Jesus, His Son, is the Lord of glory, whom even angels fear to look upon. The Holy Spirit is the precious inner being of the Father and the Son, He's the heart of the Trinity who can feel emotions, same human emotions. "And God said, let us make man in our image and likeness"
The most emotional person of the Trinity is the Holy Spirit. He's easily touched. He's such a gentleman. He's precious.
You may ask, "Do you mean that the Holy Spirit can feel heartache in a different way from the Father and the Son?"
Scripture did not say, "Grieve not the Father or the Son."
It I always and forever, "Grieve not the Spirit." (Ephesians 4:30)
Why? It is because He is touched in a deep, profound way that somehow varies from what the other Godhead experience. It's clear. That's why They protect Him so much.
The very fact that Jesus Christ said that "a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven" but "a word against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven" indicates that the Holy Ghost can be wounded.
Why is it that the Father would say, "You have vexed my Spirit"? In other words, God's Spirit was afflicted or tormented. And scripture records that "He turned Himself against them as enemy, and He fought against them" (Isaiah 63:10). Why is that the Holy Spirit is so protected?
Perhaps it is because God the Father knows how tender the Spirit is. It is almost as though the Father were saying, "If your touch Him, I'll never forgive you."
Why is the Holy Spirit so shielded by Christ that Jesus would say, "My blood will wash every sin but that"? He even said, "But he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation" (Mark 3:29). Why? Again it is because the Holy Spirit is unique and His heart can so be easily touched with pain and hurt, same as love and joy.
This is what the "Unpardonable Sin" entails.
But let me give you more. A comfort, how you can be safe from commiting this sin, and those who are safe from commiting this sin.
Before Jesus Christ said about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, He made an important statement you should read once again. He said: "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters" (Matthew 12:30)
Hence, if you are working for Christ and with His precious Holy Spirit, you do not fall into the category of His warning.
When the Lord spoke on the topic of blasphemy, He made it absolutely clear that He was admonishing people who are not working for Him and with His Spirit. These people are the ones He says are scattering because they are not gathering with Him. They fall into the category of His warning.
Ask yourself, "Am I with Him?" If the answer is yes, then ask yourself again, "Do I gather souls for Him?" If the answer is still yes, you can say, "Then I will never blaspheme the Holy Spirit". Because only those who do not gather with the master can blaspheme His Spirit.
"Are you worried?" I asked a friend who was so convinced that she had blasphemed against the Holy Spirit.
"Yes," she said with a very worried look.
I said to her, "the very fact you're worried means that you did not blaspheme the Spirit."
You see, blasphemy is an act of will that does not carry worry with it. No regret, because you know what you're doing and saying clearly and you mean what you're doing and saying.
Blasphemy is cursing Jesus and saying, "I don't care what He did!" It is saying, "Who cares what the Holy Spirit does it who He is?"
Blasphemy is insulting and disregarding or defaming what God did and doing it willfully, you mean what you say or do.
You may ask, "Well, how do I know I'll never commit that sin ?" Answer is quite simple; You'll not commit that sin as long as you never want to commit it.
Look closely at what Christ said. He said anyone who "speaks" against the Spirit will not be forgiven. That word is vital in Christ's message on the topic. To "speak" indicates a deliberate act. It's more than an idle thought. Your entire body becomes involved in the act of uttering a word. Don't forget, "what comes out of the body contaminates the body".
If the Spirit is blasphemed, He is reviled by those who have made the decision to blaspheme. It's an act of violation, a choice you "must" exercise. Must because you have made that decision that by all means you'll do it.
Where's Satan in all this? From dealing with people as a minister, I know how devils come to people and try to fill their mind with evil thoughts about the Holy Spirit or about any of the Godhead members. Would you expect any less from him? I'm sure it has happened to you a lot of times.
Any "unbecoming" thought that you have had enter your mind that you wish had never come was definitely launched by Satan and his devils.
But did you speak that thought out loud? No! The reason is because it's not your thought and you didn't want it to come in your mind anyways.
It is the one who has made the decision to speak it, that had blasphemed. "I am going to say or do it, and I don't care what God thinks!"
Saul blasphemed the Holy Spirit when he rejected the word of God and consulted other means to speak to Samuel who was dead. Saul completely rejected following God. Demas, one of Paul's companions, blasphemed when he turned his back on the gospel and returned to the lusts of the flesh. Paul wrote, ". . . Demas has forsaken me, having loving this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica" (2 Timothy 4:10)
You may ask, "You've been telling us that we can't blaspheme. What about Saul and Demas?" The point I am making here is that you can't blaspheme as long as you decide to live for Jesus and stick with it, and not say, " I'm going to do this, and I don't care what the Holy Spirit thinks or what God says" because " He didn't do what I asked Him to do for me, so I don't care about what He says" and you do what you say. It's a deliberate act, a clear decision.
The road to eternity is littered with people who start out with Christ and end up with Satan. They fall in love with the things of the world and say, " God I'm leaving". Most of these people leave for other beliefs.
However, grieving the Spirit is unique from blasphemy. Grieving the Spirit is done by the church, those who gather for Christ. And it's done almost everyday, by our actions; anger, unforgiveness, sadness, bitterness, which are not deliberate acts and we apologize for it in the end. But blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not forgivable because it is slander and insult and disregard deliberately done against the Holy Spirit - the most sensitive member of the blessed Trinity.
God the Father and the Son never jokes with their very own Holy Spirit, the power behind them, the power behind creation and life itself.
It's better to be on the safe side of gathering for and with Him, that to turn your back on Him and say, "I don't care, after all what's life, let me enjoy while it lasts"
Repent now !
Change from your ways of blaspheming against the Holy Spirit of God !
For He is the seal of the 144,000 will be raptured. (REVELATION 7)
The number isn't up yet, be a part of the list now !!! And save yourself the tribulations.
"He who testifies to these things says, 'Yes, I am coming soon'
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. (REVELATION 22:20)
If you are reading this and you aren't born again, or maybe you are but you want to ask God to forgive you, say this prayer; "Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, Precious Holy Spirit, I come before you, I acknowledge that I am a sinner, and for that matter I have made you hurt in many ways. But I come to you, asking for your forgiveness, have mercy upon me dear Lord and forgive me , wash me with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. And now I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal saviour, come into my heart Lord Jesus, be the Lord of my life. Now precious Holy Spirit, fill me up, you're welcome into my life, help me in my walk with you and help me know you more, so I never sin against you. In Jesus' mighty name I pray with thanks giving, AMEN!"
You've received Jesus and His precious Holy Spirit, now everyday, fellowship with the Holy Spirit, for He'll help you know Jesus who's the word.
GOD BLESS YOU
SHALOM ❤️
