THE NEW BITH; BEING BORN AGAIN
John 3:1-8 NIV
1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.
2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the sign you are doing if God were not with him.”
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again (The Greek for ‘again’ also means ‘from above’; also, in verse 7)
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.
7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound from where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
The above scripture gives us a clear understanding of what it is to be ‘born again’.
We can see a clear picture of what ‘The New Birth’ or being ‘Born Again’ is and I.e. The New Birth is a birth from above (Heaven/in the Spirit) that takes place in the life of a believer who has believed in and accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. It takes place when the believer has been baptized in water and the Spirit and is no longer born of man, but is now born of God spiritually. Their spirits are no longer as it used to be but is now as God’s Spirit is. They are now one with God and one as God (a same kind/breed of Spirits).
Lets see something in John 1:11-13 NIV below;
11 He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him.
12 Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God-
13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
We can also see from the above verses that when one is born again, they become children of God or sons of God just like Jesus Christ is. They are now no longer born of their parents but God is now their legitimate parent. This is a spiritual activity that takes place spiritually but will manifest physically eventually.
Now comparing the two Bible scriptures given above, one does not become born again just by believing in or accepting Jesus Christ alone as many people perceive. What happens when you believe and accept Jesus Christ is that, you are given a right; a privilege or an opportunity as in a ticket or key to now be born of God. So now, the one who has believed in Jesus Christ can now be born again of God and become a child/son of God. This will only take place when that person is baptized in water and in the Spirit; baptism in water & the Spirit.
What happens is that spiritually, the spirit of that person is being buried with Jesus Christ along with their old life and traits both biologically and spiritually. Then they are resurrected with Jesus Christ as new creatures with new identities and traits after which then their spirits are renewed and replaced with a new spirit from God’s Spirit; the Holy Spirit, hence they are now of God and not of their old selves. Now such a person is a child/son of God and can now do what the Son of God did I.e. Jesus Christ.
Another thing that must be taken note of is that as children/sons of God, we are not just born of God but also God lives in our physical bodies. Hence “S(s)on/child” of God means; God in a human body/vessel. Hence it is no longer us that live but Jesus Christ/God in us. So Jesus Christ was the Son of God not just because He was born of God only but also that God had come unto the Earth and was living in human body among men. And this is the plan of God for all humanity for which He has set this great and wonderful mystery of the New Birth in place so that we all ( humanity) can become sons/children of God. In fact being born of God means that God now lives in our human bodies and operates from inside us here on Earth. And there are various agendas that God want to enforce on Earth through us which is why He has allowed us to undergo this great and wonderful mystery.
Other things that take place when a person becomes born again is that:
l We are ushered into a living hope that is alive through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. (meaning if Jesus Christ had not resurrected, our hope would have been dead)
l We also receive an inheritance that can never perish, spoil nor fade.
This inheritance is given us because as children/sons of God, we are now heirs of God with Jesus Christ. Hence what soever is the Lord’s is prone to be ours in Heaven and even here on Earth.
This inheritance is secured in Heaven where God is for us.
We can see this in 1 Peter 1:3-5 below;
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,
5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
Lets take a look at something in Psalms 82:6,7 NIV below;
6 “I said , ‘You are “gods”; you are sons of the Most High.’
7 But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler.”
The above Bible verse tells something very profound and powerful concerning who we become when we are born again and why God planned for us to be born again. God planned for forgiveness and renewal and purification for whoever didn’t know Jesus Christ through repentance but the plan for the New Birth was something very special and different from that of repentance and forgiveness.
From the above Bible verses, we see the whole purpose for which God Almighty instituted the New Birth and we’ve seen that earlier in the previous paragraphs that it was so that we may become sons/children of God in whom God lives.
But then I’d like to ask a question; Does a fish give birth to a dog, or a fish gives birth to a fish and vice versa? The answer is obviously that a fish gives birth to a fish and a dog gives birth to a dog.
Per the laws of creation, procreation and reproduction according to the will of God; a creature produces the same creature of its own kind and not of another kind. Which relates to the above example that a fish will produce a fish. A human will produce a human. Hence a S(s)pirit will produce a spirit and God / a god will produce a god. We can see that clearly in the above verses which captures God Almighty speaking of us (born again people) as gods. God speaks of us as ‘sons of the Most High’ and that can only happen when one is born again. Meaning whoever is born again automatically becomes a god because their Father is God and Spirit gives birth to spirit hence God gives birth to gods.
We become gods the moment we become born again and God becomes our Father. But we are still in human bodies hence we shall die like mere mortals (they who are not born again).
This is the great and wonderful plan of God for us all; that we become gods both in the Spirit and here on Earth and reign in both places for Him. All we have to do is repent of our iniquities, seek forgiveness, accept and believe in Jesus Christ, then allow for oneself to be born again through baptized in water and in the Spirit.
Many believer and born again Christians are ignorant of this mystery hence we handle ourselves anyhow and allow various things to afflict and oppress us not knowing who we are and what we carry as sons and children of God. The New Birth has given us the opportunity to become co-heirs with Jesus Christ in His kingdom. It has given is an inheritance that we have received through God adopting us as His own. We’ve been made gods - children of the Most High.
It is time that Christians and born-again believers worldwide come to this knowledge and take their rightful place in the Spirit and here on Earth.
May God help us attain this mystery in Jesus Name!
NB:
-If you are not born again and is willing to make the first step to becoming a child of God, say this prayer with your whole heart and spirit.
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus the Son, Precious Holy Spirit, I come wholeheartedly before Your throne today as I lay down my life before You. I have sinned as Your word has said and have fallen short of Your Glory, but I have regretted and have come to seek your forgiveness and help. I repent of my sins. I ask that you may show me mercy and grant me access to a new life in You. Now I denounce my old life and old ways and accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I declare my faith and belief in You, Jesus Christ and I surrender my life, will, emotions, heart, mind and being to The Holy Spirit. Make me a vessel of honour unto You Lord Jesus Christ. I am forgiven. I am saved, I am delivered. Thank You Jesus!
IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME I HAVE PRAYED, AMEN.
